Mythbusters eye edition
Today, I am listing a few statements we have all heard about our eyes and vision. Are they myth or fact? You decide and see below to see if you are right.
Myth or fact?
1. Eating carrots gives you good vision.
2. Sitting too close to the television will hurt your eyes.
3. Reading in the dark will hurt your eyes.
4. People over 40 can wear contact lenses.
5. Children can wear contact lenses.
6. If you pass the vision test at the DMV, there is no need for a regular eye exam.
7. A sliced raw potato is a good way to treat welder’s burn.
8. Wearing glasses makes you more dependent on them, and therefore makes your vision worse.
9. If you can’t read the top of the visual acuity chart without your glasses, that means you are legally blind.
10. If you cross your eyes, they will get stuck that way.
1. Fact. Carrots are rich in vitamin A which is essential for the eye to maintain good vision. Eating an abundance of carrots will not give you ‘super-vision’, however.
2. Myth. Despite what your mom told you, sitting too close to the TV does not harm the eyes. Children commonly do this. They have amazing focusing ability and are able to keep what they are seeing clear.
3. Myth. Reading in the dark won’t damage your eyes, but may cause eyestrain.
4. Fact. The loss of focusing ability for near tasks and dry eye causes many to stop wearing contact lenses after age 40, however new multifocal designs and better lens materials allow more people to continue successfully wearing contact lenses for many years!
5. Fact. Contact lenses can be great addition to wearing glasses for active kids, and has been shown to boost self-esteem. Contacts are a medical device and must be cared for properly. However, disposable soft lenses, specifically daily disposables, can be both safe and convenient for kids.
6. Myth. Vision screenings do not take the place of comprehensive eye examinations that completely check vision, focusing ability, binocularity, and eye health. Some potentially serious eye diseases do not have symptoms at first, such as glaucoma.
7. I have no idea. Personally, I don’t believe in any special healing powers of potatoes, but I have patients that insist it helps.
8. Myth. I hear this mostly from people over forty who are starting to need reading glasses or bifocals. There is a natural progression of loss of focusing ability that will occur whether or not you wear correction. Not wearing correction, however, can cause eyestrain.
9. Myth. The (partial) definition of legally blind is having 20/200 or worse central visual acuity in the better seeing eye WITH correction. So if you can see better than 20/200 in one eye WITH glasses or contacts, you are not legally blind (unless perhaps you have significant loss of peripheral vision).
10. Myth. But don’t tell the kids this!
